Bringing the Outside In

Shenzhen Office Lobby

We took exterior cues of time passing for this lobby design in China’s Silicon Valley.

LOCATION: Shenzhen, China

CLIENT: Commercial Developer

OVERVIEW: Office Tower Lobby Design

SERVICES: Architecture

Our idea was to create an experiential design that gives a sense of time passing using natural phenomena.

We wanted to have fun with technology and the local geography. Inspired by fog that rolls over the Shenzhen River in the mornings, we projected clouds across the lobby ceiling and core walls.

Our challenge was to attract more people to the lobby using the client’s design brief, which referenced the flow of Alpine waters. We dove into research and wondered if we could create the flow of water in the form clouds with LED panels.

We set up cameras on roof to take pictures of the sky on sunny days; using natural phenomena of experiential design. Like the people flowing through the lobby, the projections of clouds are always moving throughout the interior.

In a further connection to nature, we used photovoltaic panels to collect sunlight energy to power the interior light of the lobby.

Drawing from the diverse experience of our team of experts, we strove to design a compelling experience that would entice office workers and pedestrians alike to come in and experience the beauty of the clouds.
